Jamie Carragher has claimed he hopes an Everton fan that picked up the corner flag on Thursday night got to take it home following their 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Goodison Park.

Both teams had gone into the showdown knowing it would be the final Merseyside derby at the ground before the Toffees move to a new stadium in the summer.

And the occasion, without a doubt, lived up to the hype.

Beto gave Everton an early lead, only for Liverpool to turn things around courtesy of goals in either half from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool supporters, sensing victory, started to rub salt into their rival’s wounds.

But Everton secured a draw right at the death through James Tarkowski, with the former Burnley star unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

Carragher, as a Liverpool legend, can be forgiven for feeling frustrated after his team dropped two crucial points in the Premier League title race.

Yet the Sky Sports pundit, writing on X, has made it clear he’s got no issue with Everton’s wild celebrations.

“#EVELIV was a classic!” he wrote. “Sickener at the end but fair play to the blues as the ⚽️ was a cracker.

“Fitting way I suppose to end this fixture at Goodison 🤝. I know people think I’m the celebration 👮🏻 but I do hope that lad kept the corner flag! 7pts clear 14 to go.”

Everton fans couldn’t contain their delight on Thursday.

Goodison was a cauldron of noise on the night and supporters relished the chance to dent Liverpool’s title hopes, even if they remain strong favourites to lift the trophy come the end of the season.

And Everton boss David Moyes was delighted to see his side earn a draw on the night.

“I think it was hugely important that Evertonians get to finish at their stadium as best as they can,” he said.

“I just feel the support in here was unbelievable tonight, it was incredible support and I think it was fitting they got an end like they did.

“I said to the players there it’s great the supporters can go away – we didn’t win, which was disappointing, but we got a draw in a game that didn’t look as if it was going to go in our favour.

On the mass brawl that saw Abdoulaye Doucoure, Curtis Jones, Slot and Sipke Hulshoff sent off at the end of the contest, he added: “The bit after the game, I could tell you about it but the truth is it’s not really what we should be talking about.
