What’s your shower routine like? Do you keep it simple, or are there many steps you follow?

One woman has been left feeling disgusted by her previous lack of hygiene before she learned how to “shower properly”. She claimed that the method she’d been using for years was wrong, but she’d finally seen the light thanks to another TikTok creator.

TikTok user @nicoletravelandlife shared with her followers “how to actually have a shower,” confessing that she’d been doing it wrong for the past 28 years.

Nicole revealed that she’d watched a video on “how to actually wash your body,” and it made her feel unclean because she hadn’t been following this method until now.

“I swear to god, I’ve been going in the shower, showering with body wash, washing my hair, and then getting out,” she confessed. But what was she missing out that was so vital?

She explained that she’d followed the steps recommended by Kay Marie in the video she’d watched, and she’d “never ever felt so clean” before. The first step was to get into the shower and wash your entire body with a Dettol soap bar.

She mentioned that it leaves your skin “feeling super clean, but a little bit dry,” so once you’ve done that, it’s crucial to follow step two. Nicole advised: “You then need a moisturising body wash,” adding that she chose a Nivea product and it made her skin feel “super soft”.

The third step was to use a body scrub, and she used Aldi’s to “exfoliate her whole skin”. She suggested that maybe she should’ve exfoliated as step two, but she “didn’t,” and it still felt good.

She then applied a glycolic acid on her face, also from Aldi.

Nicole shared that after washing her hair, she’s on the hunt for shampoo recommendations as she’s currently using an 89p Alberto Balsam shampoo. Despite the next step being to get out of the shower, Nicole’s routine doesn’t end there.

“Once you’re out of the shower, you just wipe over your face with some micellar water, and then once I’m all clean, I use the Inkey List cleanser and hyaluronic acid,” she explained. Following this, she applies a caffeine eye cream to appear more alert, and moisturiser from Inkey List.

Nicole also suggested using Drunk Elephant bronzing drops, claiming she doesn’t “need to wear foundation” when she uses them. “But oh my god, I’ve never felt so clean, and I cannot believe it’s taken me 28 years to learn how to wash,” she concluded in her video.

In the comments, one person wrote: “I always wash my hair twice always have done. Always wash your hair first.”

Some admitted they “couldn’t be bothered with that,” joking they’d “run out of hot water” before completing the entire routine, while another quipped, “Consumerism final boss”.

A warning came from a woman who said: “Antibacterial soap can be bad for you with overuse, the bacteria on your skin can become resistant and make you sick, so don’t overuse it”. Another added: “This! My mum is a beautician. When you use antibacterial soap, you wash the bad and good bacteria off. It’s not necessary to use it daily for the average person.”

However, a man justified the practice, saying: “We used to do this back in the 90s, we used to put Dettol in the bath”.

It’s worth noting that people’s skin types vary, and reactions to different products can differ greatly. Those with sensitive skin are advised not to try this shower routine, and for specific skin concerns, it’s best to consult a GP who can refer you to a dermatologist if needed.
