The State Meteorological Agency for Spain, Aemet, has issued a warning as the Canary Islands could be facing some unseasonal weather this week. The alert cautioned residents and travellers over cold temperatures, frost and even some Sahara dust sweeping in from the East.
A report by La Razon noted that the weather on the islands is expected to remain stable during the start of the week. This includes just a little bit of cloud cover across the islands on Tuesday.
However, as the afternoon drones on some “light haze” is expected in certain areas, with light frost expected across the peaks of Tenerife. Aemet has specifically cautioned people in these areas to prepare for “intense cold” during the night and lasting through dawn.
Luckily, only light breezes are expected from the north but people with respiratory issues are cautioned around doing activities outside. This is because Saharan dust blown in from the east could be an irritant or trigger for their health condition.
Aemet has recommended people using Tenerife’s mountain roads exercise “extreme caution” – particularly if they are driving at night or in the dawn hours when frost is likely. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura islands are expected to get the best weather over the next week with only a few cloud intervals, stable temperatures and light winds.
Gran Canaria is due to get much of the same but with “more evident haze” in higher altitude areas. Tenerife is reportedly expecting temperature drops on its peaks that could result in frost on Tuesday night. Temperatures are expected to be around 15 and 21 degrees Celsius.
La Gomera and La Palma may get the most cloud cover throughout the course of the day, with even some potential rain for both islands. Although these have been predicted as just “light, scattered and occasional showers”.
Finally, in El Hierro cloud cover is expected to increase throughout the day with stable temperatures and some light winds as the day concludes. This island faces the coldest temperatures, expected between 12 and 15 degrees Celsius.
