Sergio Aguero has been left red-faced after Real Madrid’s stunning 3-2 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.

The former City striker had confidently declared on the Som I Serem FCB Podcast: “Real Madrid cannot beat Man City. If they beat City, I will cut off my testicles!”

Aguero, who spent a decade at City between 2011 and 2021, made the daring statement ahead of the Champions League clash against the Spanish giants.

The Argentine’s words have now come back to haunt him following Madrid’s dramatic 3-2 triumph, which leaves his former club facing an uphill battle to progress in the competition.

City initially appeared to be proving Aguero right when Erling Haaland fired them into the lead in the first half.

The Norwegian striker finished off an impressive move involving Jack Grealish and Josko Gvardiol to put the hosts ahead.

However, Real Madrid found their way back into the match on the hour mark through Kylian Mbappe.

The French forward’s attempted volley from Dani Ceballos’ through ball took a fortunate deflection off his shin, looping over Ederson and into the net.

The equaliser set up a dramatic final portion of the match at the Etihad, with both sides pushing for victory.

City looked to have secured victory when they were awarded a penalty with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Haaland stepped up to convert from the spot after Ceballos had brought down Phil Foden in the box.

But Real Madrid staged a remarkable comeback in the final five minutes of the match, with former City player Brahim Diaz came off the bench to level the scores with four minutes remaining.

The decisive moment arrived when Vinicius Jr dispossessed Rico Lewis, who failed to clear his lines properly.

The Brazilian winger clipped the ball beyond Ederson, allowing Jude Bellingham to tap into an empty net for the winner.

City must now overturn a 3-2 deficit at the Bernabeu in next week’s return leg.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti was delighted with his team’s performance at the Etihad.

“I think it was a complete game in all aspects, beyond criticism from my part,” said the Italian boss.

“Everyone worked hard. We had a lot of chances. We didn’t give up when we were behind.”

Ancelotti also praised his side’s defensive organisation and attacking prowess.

“We defended well, with a compact block. They took the lead with a penalty but up front our players were very effective,” he added.
