A dentist has warned against copying a common brushing ‘mistake’ regularly seen on TV in adverts, shows, and films. Dr Shaadi Manouchehri, a cosmetic dentist and facial aesthetic practitioner, issued the advice on her popular TikTok account (@Drshaadimanouchehri).

Dr Manouchehri said: “I don’t know who needs to hear this but you’re probably using way too much toothpaste. All the adverts and TV shows/movies are lying to you! You literally just need a pea-sized amount of toothpaste on your toothbrush.”

She added: “Make sure to spit and not rinse out to get the maximum protection from fluoride toothpaste.” In a follow-up video, Dr Manouchehri demonstrated how much toothpaste you need using an electric toothbrush.

Emphasising her message, the expert said: “This is your daily reminder that you only need a pea-sized amount of toothpaste to brush your teeth every day, twice a day. The toothpaste needs to have fluoride in it to protect your teeth and make them physically stronger.

“You don’t need any more than this. This is literally how much you need. If you’re using any more than this, if you’re doing one of those swirls on your normal manual toothbrush, it is too much, and you’re just going to waste it.”

Dr Manouchehri also answered viewers questions about the common mistake. Replying to a commenter who said, “I understand what your saying, but It doesn’t look enough to cover your teeth. So I put a little extra just in case, but I’m I doing wrong?”

The expert said: “Trust me a pea-sized amount is enough! Will be difficult at first if you’re not used to it.” Elsewhere, someone commented: “I feel like a pea-sized amount isn’t enough for all my teeth.” Offering reassurance, Dr Manouchehri said: “It will be! Make sure to spit not rinse.”

A healthy brushing routine includes brushing your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste for about two minutes. You should also floss or use an interdental brush once a day.

Brush in a circular motion and brush up to the gum line. Use a timer to ensure you brush for at least two minutes. Also use dental floss, a special brush, or wooden or plastic pick. Floss or use an interdental brush every day to remove food, debris, and plaque.
