With tens of thousands of posts on platforms such as TikTok, sea moss is the internet’s newest health obsession. But is it worth the hype?

The experts at Landys Chemist have looked into it and explained the benefits and drawbacks and whether it’s a ‘superfood’ or ‘superfad’. They said that while it could have various benefits, it might not be suitable for everyone.

Benefits of taking sea moss

Thyroid supportSea moss capsules contain large amounts of iodine, a key mineral for healthy thyroid function, metabolism and hormone production. Sea moss can be a great and natural way to maintain thyroid health for those with low iodine levels.

It is rich in nutrients – Sea moss is packed with vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium, which are great for supporting bone health, muscle function, and immunity. Its antioxidants also fight free radicals, which aids in reducing inflammation and boosting overall wellbeing.

Promotes gut and skin health – Sea moss contains prebiotics that support gut bacteria, aiding digestion, while its hydrating and collagen-boosting properties contribute to healthier skin.

Drawbacks of taking sea moss

It’s not for everyone – While beneficial for many, sea moss isn’t suitable for people with thyroid disorders like hyperthyroidism, as too much iodine can disrupt hormone balance. Individuals with high heavy metal levels or those on blood thinners should also avoid it.

Risk of metal absorption – As a seaweed, sea moss can absorb heavy metals and toxins from the ocean. Buying from a reputable brand that tests for contaminants is crucial in preventing any possible health risks.

Allergies and pregnancy – Some individuals may be allergic to sea moss, leading to skin rashes, itching, or other symptoms. It is also recommended that those pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a doctor before taking sea moss, as its high iodine content could affect hormone levels.

Rhysa Phommachanh, health and personal care specialist at Landys Chemist, said: “Beyond capsules, sea moss is incredibly versatile and can be easily added to smoothies, protein shakes, or even used as a natural thickening agent in soups and sauces. This makes it an easy addition to any diet, offering both convenience and a nutritional boost.

“Sea moss should not be taken with amiodarone, a medication used to treat heart rhythm disorders. The combination can lead to dangerously high iodine levels, which may disrupt thyroid function and cause serious health issues.

“Irish sea moss is a powerhouse supplement, but like any health product, it should be taken with awareness. Always check with a healthcare professional to determine if it’s right for you.”
