Cam Allen has been suspended indefinitely by the Ontario Hockey League.
OHL officials announced on Tuesday they will conduct a review into the events of Feb. 8 that resulted in the 20-year-old London Knights defenceman being charged by London police with several offences, including impaired driving.
Police say officers responded to a single-vehicle collision near Colonel Talbot Road and Clayton Walk in southwest London’s Lambeth area at about 3:20 a.m. on Saturday. Officers arrived and found an unoccupied, running vehicle with blood on the driver’s side door and leading away from the vehicle, police said. Officers arrested a person at a nearby address, police said.
In a Sunday night statement, the Knights said Allen “takes this matter very seriously and has assured us that he will fully cooperate with the court process.”
He is scheduled to next appear in court March 6.
The Knights are in first place in the OHL and ranked No. 1 in the Canadian Hockey League. They’re heading to Barrie on Thursday to face the Colts.
Allen, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 OHL draft, was traded to London by Guelph in December – a major trade that further bolstered London’s blue-line and underscored their push for a second straight berth in the Memorial Cup. Allen has four goals and 17 points in 18 games since the trade.
He is a fifth-round pick of the NHL’s Washington Capitals.
Hours before the crash, the Knights beat the Peterborough Petes at Canada Life Place in downtown London. The team’s 50/50 draw during the game was held in support of MADD Canada, an agency that advocates to end impaired driving, and its local chapter.
