An unnamed 27-year-old man is facing a slew of charges after allegedly unleashing a “chaotic and dangerous series of events” in downtown Hamilton.

Hamilton Police said they first responded to a fire Sunday at about 4:15 p.m. at the Salvation Army on York Blvd., where a man was seen loitering in the lobby before igniting a fire that caused about $150,000 worth of damage.

The suspect fled on foot and a “short time later” entered nearby Jackson Square before being confronted by security guards over a trespass order. The suspect refused to comply, armed himself with “multiple large knives” and then produced an imitation firearm, which he threatened to shoot at people nearby.

Police said he was “quickly and safely captured” and no injuries had been reported as of Monday.

The accused is charged with arson and multiple counts of assault with a weapon, uttering death threats and failure to comply with probation, among other offences.
