While washing and changing bed linen is a common task, mattresses often get neglected. If your mattress requires a deep clean, an expert has shared a simple two-ingredient solution.
Fortunately, you don’t need any specialist cleaning products; instead, you can use items from your kitchen cupboard. Baking soda and vinegar are your go-to ingredients for eliminating unpleasant smells, bacteria, and stains, reports the Express.
Leanne Stapf, VP of Operations at The Cleaning Authority, advised NBC News : “It’s important to clean your mattress often to avoid dust mites, dead skin cells, etc. For stain removal especially, try spraying the mattress with vinegar and sprinkle baking soda over the top.
“You can place a towel over the area and let it sit for one to two hours. Then take your vacuum and go over the mattress for a final clean.”
This cleaning method effectively removes unwanted odours, as well as stains and bacteria. The baking soda acts as a natural deodoriser, helping to eliminate smells caused by sweat, body oils, and accumulated dust on the mattress.

Meanwhile, vinegar assists in breaking down stains. Perfect Clean explained that when baking soda and vinegar are combined, they undergo a chemical reaction producing water and carbon dioxide. This process aids in loosening and lifting stains.
Before applying the solution, it’s best to prepare your mattress by giving it a thorough vacuum. Then, after allowing the solution to soak in for a few hours, give it another vacuum. Once this is done, you can let the mattress air dry.
Perfect Carpet Cleaning suggests a proactive approach to minimise odours and any unwanted build-up on your mattress. This includes vacuuming both sides of the mattress once a month; opening the windows when changing bed linen; and rotating the mattress “at least” four times a year.
