A chef made a pizza with a topping he says is ‘more controversial than pineapple’ and people are loving it.

Matthew Sullivan was a contestant on Top Chef Canada season 6 and he shares food videos on Instagram. In one of his Instagram reels he demonstrated how to make a pizza with a very unusual topping – grapes.

If you’re looking for a unique pizza to make today (Sunday, February 9) for National Pizza Day this might be for you. He cut the green grapes in halves and sprinkled them all over the top of the pizza.

He introduced his video with the text: “Making pizzas with a topping more controversial than pineapple V3.0. An absolute banger…5000 out of 10.”

For the caption of his Instagram post he wrote: “Grape pizza. Pizza status upgrading. Matthew begins making his pizza by preparing the grapes as he cuts them in halves on a chopping board.

He then makes the pizza dough, rolling it out on a floured surface. Next he adds a layer of mozzarella, the halved grapes, some feta and pecorino cheeses, olive oil and black pepper.

He then cooks the pizza in a wood fired oven and once it is cooked, he adds some prosciutto, fresh mint, olive oil and more pecorino on top. Once all the toppings have been added, cut the pizza into slices and enjoy.

Matthew’s Instagram reel has amassed a staggering 7.9 million views, over 227,000 likes and over 4,600 comments. Some users weren’t impressed by the pizza as they said called it a “charcuterie board with more steps” and a “hate crime.”

However, another person expressed a more positive opinion: “Sweet + salty = good. Pineapple in pizza is only controversial to grown toddlers.”

Someone from Italy, the country pizza originates from, also gave their approval on Matthew’s grape pizza. They commented: “As an Italian, hell yeah.”

A different user shared that the best pizza they ever had included red grapes, lamb sausage and kale. Another grapes on pizza fan commented: “Grapes + cheese is an elite combo.”

Meanwhile one user suggested: “A little balsamic drizzled on that may bang.” Someone who had a pizza party with their friends shared that they tried out Matthew’s grape pizza recipe.

They said: “Hey there!! Me and my friend had a weird pizza party yesterday and we tried some of your recipes. This one was our favourite, so well balanced and delicious!! I myself loved the one with dried apricots and lamb.

“Also pumpkin was amazing! Congratulations you tingled our curiosity and we were so inspired! BTW I’m Italian, from Rome, but I’m really open-minded when it comes to food and experiments. Honestly thanks for this content!”

Matthew has posted Instagram reels of other pizzas he has made with controversial toppings, including kiwi pesto, pickles and even marshmallows. Some people are fans of his unusual pizza recipes but others are more sceptical.
