Three Chilean nationals face charges stemming from a failed carjacking in King Township last month.
York Regional Police say officers responded after a motorist driving on King Rd., near Hwy. 27, was rear-ended by another vehicle around 8:20 p.m. on Jan. 9.
As the driver exited their vehicle, two people approached wearing face coverings – at least one of whom had a firearm – and attempted to steal the victim’s vehicle.
But police say the car thieves were unsuccessful and instead fled with items belonging to the victim.
Investigators subsequently identified suspects and executed search warrants on Wednesday at two residences and on two vehicles in Toronto. Two men were arrested at that time.
A third suspect was identified and intercepted on Thursday by the Department of Homeland Security in Houston, Texas. That man has since been returned to Toronto, arrested by the Canadian Border Services Agency, and transferred into the custody of York Regional Police.
Kevin Espinoza Rojas, 25, Martin Tapia Gonazlez, 22, and Carlos Caravjal Moya, 22, all of Chile, each face charges of robbery with a firearm, wearing a disguise with intent, possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, and unlawful use of credit card.
Caravjal Moya is also charged with possession of an electronic device for motor vehicle theft.
