A group of vandals rampaged through McGill University on Wednesday night, smashing at least two dozen windows and doors across three buildings.

Montreal police received multiple 911 calls at around 8:20 p.m., reporting a group of at least 20 individuals vandalizing the central campus, according to police spokesperson Mariane Allaire Morin.

“There were several calls made to 911 for a group of individuals smashing windows,” Morin told The Gazette. “By the time police arrived, the vandals had already fled on foot.”

Shattered glass remained scattered across the campus overnight. The attackers targeted the university’s Leacock, Arts, and James Administration buildings. No injuries were reported as of Wednesday evening, Morin said.

Montreal police are now interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance footage, but no arrests have been made.

As of Wednesday evening, investigators had not determined a motive for the incident.

However, symbols associated with anarchism were graffitied on campus.

The vandalism comes as McGill has become a focal point for demonstrations over the past two years amid the Israel-Hamas war, with some protests escalating into clashes with police and acts of vandalism.
