The gunman who killed 10 people in Sweden’s deadliest shooting shouted “get out of Europe” in between firing shots at his victims.

Video footage reportedly shows the suspect, named in reports as 35-year-old local man Rickard Andersson, yelling as he carried out his deadly attack at Orebro’s Risbergska adult education centre.

The centre offers Swedish language courses for migrants and programmes for people with learning disabilities.

The clip was taken by student Hashem Shams, who was hiding in the toilet from the gunman. Swedish broadcaster TV4 has analysed the footage and improved the audio.

Rickard Andersson was described as someone who ‘lived in isolation and had mental problems’

In the footage, a voice can be heard shouting “you should leave Europe”, with two shots being fired immediately afterwards. The outlet could not clarify if the gunman was the one who shouted the remarks.

Police said it remains unclear what Andersson’s motive was before the shooting at Campus Risbergska in Orebro, about 200km west of Stockholm.

The authorities stated there were no warnings before the attack and believe the perpetrator acted alone, with no suspected connections to terrorism at this point.

Eleven people died in the shooting, including the attacker, with at least six others injured.

According to local press, some of the victims were Syrian citizens.

Police heard gunshots upon arrival at the scene and initially believed they were being targeted, local police chief Roberto Eid Forest revealed.

The shooting began around midday on Tuesday, following a national exam when many students had already left the premises.

Students sought refuge in nearby buildings as parts of the campus were evacuated.

Footage from Shams shows him trying to calm his breathing as some of his classmates were shot to death on the other side of the door. He can be seen flinching at the sound of gunfire.

“People are calling for help,” Hashem wrote, before police officers later burst into the cubicle to save him.

Andersson has been described by local press as someone who “lived in isolation and had mental problems”.

His relatives said that he had distanced himself from friends and family in recent years.

He is reported to have changed into a military uniform in the school’s bathroom before he opened fire. Andersson had repeatedly been denied military service, documents from the Swedish National Service Agency cited by Aftonbladet show.

The head of local police noted that the school’s large premises made it challenging for officers to complete their search and confirm there were no additional victims.

Officers later conducted a raid on the suspect’s home, though they have not disclosed what was found.

Three women and two men with gunshot wounds underwent surgery at hospital, all in serious but stable condition after suffering life-threatening injuries.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson described the tragedy as unprecedented.

“Today, we have witnessed brutal, deadly violence against completely innocent people,” Kristersson told reporters.

“This is the worst mass shooting in Swedish history. Many questions remain unanswered, and I cannot provide those answers either,” he added.
