You simply can’t top a smashing sandwich.

They’re moreish, satisfying and come packed with an endless variety of flavours. In other words, they’re the ultimate lunchtime treat.

However, when it comes to the perfect sandwich, acclaimed Great British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood has weighed in on which bread reigns supreme. Hollywood has caused quite the stir on TikTok by disclosing his preferred choice for the best sandwich bread.

He commented: “The best sandwich bread. It depends on the sandwich. I’m really fond of an egg and cress sandwich.

“Soft white loaf with the crust cut off. Yeah, I know – cut off. I think a baguette works beautifully for a sandwich – whether it’s that classic sort of cheese and ham.

“Focaccia works beautifully well with a steak sandwich with rocket on the top. Amazing. Choose your filling, and then choose your favourite bread.”

Since he shared the video, viewers have flocked to it in their thousands, sparking a lively debate in the comments section.

One enthusiastic fan exclaimed: “Choose your filling and then choose your bread. This is the way!”

Another suggested: “Sourdough baguette with an egg and cress filling. Add a tiny bit of grated cheese and it’s a total winner.”

Someone else found amusement in Hollywood’s preferences, saying: “The fact that Paul Hollywood, of all people, has his crusts cut off is funnier to me than it should be.”

Not to be left out, another follower added: “I truly believe you’re the reason behind my bread addiction.”

The secret to the “perfect” sandwich

While Paul Hollywood doesn’t provide a definitive answer, some believe that specific types of bread should be used for making sandwiches.

Common choices include white bread, sourdough or baguettes due to their versatility and ability to accommodate various fillings.

However, the ideal bread for a sandwich largely depends on its contents. For instance, denser breads like rye are more suitable for moist ingredients, while lighter options such as ciabatta are perfect for grilled sandwiches with less filling.
