Northern Ireland Electricity workers have joined the Storm Éowyn repair and restoration operation in the Republic of Ireland.

The 180 workers have travelled to the Republic after finishing the operation to restore power to over 280,000 homes, businesses, and farms in Northern Ireland.

They have joined local ESB crews and other electricity workers who have travelled to the Republic from several European countries.

Storm Eowyn brought record breaking winds and left hundreds of thousands of people across the island without power.

The repair and restoration operation is now in it’s final stages and is focusing on the countryside and a high number of one-off rural dwellings.

A spokesperson for NEI said, ”Following restoration efforts in Northern Ireland, NIE Networks are providing assistance to colleagues in ESB Networks by sending approximately 180 staff including engineers, linesmen and utility arborists, as well as machinery and equipment to help.

“These staff are from NIE Networks and our contracting partners.

“The energy network in the UK and Ireland have mutual arrangements in place to provide assistance during storms.

“We appreciated the support from the rest of the UK during our response to Storm Eowyn and are keen to help other electricity utilities when possible.

“We wish to thank all staff that are providing this support.”
