Good Morning Britain host Susanna Reid rushed to comfort one upset guest on Wednesday’s show.
Susanna, 54, and Ed Balls spoke to Barnaby Webber’s mother Emma. Barnaby was tragically killed alongside his friend Grace O’Malley-Kumar in Nottingham as they made their way home from a night out, with paranoid schizophrenic Valdo Calocane also going on to kill Ian Coates.
Calocane was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after killing 19-year-old students Barnaby and Grace, and 65-year-old caretaker Ian, before attempting to kill three other people, in a spate of attacks in Nottingham in June 2023.
On Wednesday’s show, Good Morning Britain reported that “NHS England has been forced to publish the full report revealing a litany of mistakes in the medical care of Calocane”.
During the discussion on the show, Barnaby’s mother Emma expressed her determination to secure justice, vowing: “We will do whatever we have to do to right this wrong, I promise you Barnaby, I promise you!”, reports the Manchester Evening News.
As Emma spoke of Barnaby’s unfulfilled milestones, she became overcome with emotion. She wept, remembering that her son should be celebrating his final year of university and turning 21.
“He should be here in Nottingham on his final year of university being 21-years-old. It was his birthday last month, that was crucifying, his 21st.”
During the incredibly moving segment, Susanna became visibly emotional as she commended Emma for keeping her son Barnaby close to her heart, symbolised by the locket necklace she wears daily.
Emma then broke down in tears as Susanna rushed over to comfort the grieving mother. Emma said: “He’s with Grace, he’s up there with Ian, probably learning to fish. Thank you, I don’t want to be a mess all day but thank you everybody I appreciate it.”
To which an emotional Susanna replied: “I don’t know how you get through it, I honestly don’t, and I know that viewers are completely with you.”
Taking to Twitter, now X, viewers were quick to praise Emma for her brave interview on Wednesday’s show.
One person said: “Emma Webber is a wonderfully brave women. #GMB”, a different account put: “Oh this poor woman #gmb” with hearts, another wrote: “@GMB Wow, powerful stuff. Emma Webber is one incredible, amazingly strong person. #GMB” while a different account added: “what an emotional interview with Emma #GMB.”
Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays at 6am on ITV and ITV X.
