Choosing a name for your newborn is one of the thrilling decisions that come with parenthood. It could be a name that holds sentimental value, a unique choice that resonates with you, or perhaps a traditional pick.
Regardless of the selection, it’s inevitable that people will form opinions about it, whether they voice them or not. One mother shared her discomfort when revealing her children’s names due to the apparent disapproval, which they couldn’t hide.
Katie, a mum-of-two who goes by Chlias on TikTok, used the platform to discuss her experience of choosing less common baby names and dealing with the subsequent reactions. “If I have to say my children’s names, I instantly cringe at the fact that we’re about to engage in a very awkward conversation,” she confessed.
Despite her deep affection for her children’s names and no regrets over her choices, Katie expressed a wish for people to better conceal their disappointment upon hearing them. Her daughter’s name, Murphy, is one she and her husband “absolutely love”.
The name Murphy first caught Katie’s attention in the film Interstellar, where the lead character is named Murphy Cooper. She found it “so cool”.
Katie also admitted to disliking her own common name and wanted her daughter to have a more distinctive one. “Everybody has my name,” she lamented.
Working in education and encountering numerous names, one mum sought to choose a name for her baby that would be unique to her child. She expressed her fondness for their choice: “It’s a name you either love or you hate, but we absolutely love it,” she stated.
Additionally, the mother shared the origin of her son’s name, Beauden, noting he’s often called “Beau for short”. She attributed the name to New Zealand’s rugby union star Beauden Barrett, with her husband being the one who picked it out.
She’s equally enchanted by its various forms, particularly the nickname Beau, which is gaining popularity.
In response to her story, commenters expressed their affection for her children’s names. One commenter divulged the unconventional names of their own kids: “Love their names. Ee get lots of looks my children are Riot, Nirvana, Aurora, Bodhi and Philo.”
Another supported her preference for distinctive names, mentioning their grown children’s own unique monikers: “Yep love her name. Love unusual names. Mine are adults now and have different names and they love them.”
A third commenter chimed in with approval: “Love your babies names! ! We have Daisy, Miles and River and so many people say ‘oh’ to River but I really don’t think it’s that unusual these days.”
