B&M shoppers often get to try sweet treats that are rarely seen on UK shop shelves – but the newest offering has a few people confused and conflicted after they realise what goes into a classic British treat. The new Maltesers Honeycomb pack excited many chocoholics when it was posted into a Facebook group called Snack Reviews.
The person opened up the bite-sized balls covered in honeycomb-infused chocolate. For a limited time, shoppers can grab a bag in the B&M sweet aisle for £2.99 – however, there are a few people who struggled to understand how the chocolate is anything ‘new’.
Confusion arose over the ‘honeycomb’ flavour since many were convinced Maltesers traditionally feature a honeycomb centre. One person commented: “But isn’t the inside of a Malteaser honeycomb?”
Another agreed, adding: “If it’s honey now, what was it before? A third wrote: “Am I being daft? The middle of a Maltester has ALWAYS been honeycomb hasn’t it?”
Some people were quick to clarify that Maltesers typically contain malted milk centres, not honeycomb. The balls are then encased in a smooth chocolate shell, reports the Mirror.
Despite the mixed reactions, the excitement around B&M’s rare find was undeniable. One shopper made an obvious connection to another fan-favourite bar, writing: “So it’ll be like eating balls of Crunchie? Sign me up!”
Another commented: “Is this a sick joke? Why did I decide to be on a diet when these came out?” Another stated: “Sounds delicious!”
Honeycomb Malteasers won’t be totally unfamiliar to some as the treat originates from Australia. B&M is known for importing ‘rarely seen’ chocolate bars from Australia to the UK, such as the infamous Cherry Ripe and the fusion of Milkybar and Biscoff.
Malteasers have been a staple in British confectionery history. First created in the late 1930s, they quickly became popular worldwide.
Back then, Maltesers were originally marketed towards women looking to slim down, as their advertising often highlighted the “lighter” nature of the malted milk centre compared to regular chocolate. Now, according to a YouGov poll, the most popular sweet treat in the UK sits alongside other sweets and chocolates in shops nationwide.
Although classic Malteasers have been gracing shop shelves for decades, the treat has undergone subtle changes, with special versions released both in the UK and globally. Some versions have switched up the coating – swapping milk chocolate for white or dark – while others have introduced new flavours like popcorn, mint, orange, and raspberry.
