BBC Breakfast’s weather presenter Carol Kirkwood jokingly made a hasty exit from the set after her attempt at humour seemed to miss the mark with presenters Jon Kay and Sally Nugent, leaving them somewhat perplexed.
The awkward moment unfolded during a conversation about the deceptively sunny weather. Jon admitted: “It does remind you to take your coat out with you, I’ve left mine at home.”
Prompting a surprised response from his on-screen co-star Sally: “You haven’t. You’ve not got a coat with you,” to which Jon confirmed his lack of outerwear, saying: “I have, I’ve been lulled into a false sense of security with the slightly warmer weather.”
Sally, clearly unimpressed, reiterated: “You’ve left the house without a coat,” and with a shake of her head, she added, “Jon,” to which he replied: “Hey, it’s February.”
It was during this moment that Sally playfully suggested that they should encourage summer to come early, reports the Express.
Carol interjected interrupting Sally’s trail of thought, sharing a traditional Scottish saying about when it’s safe to forgo winter wear. She shared: “You know what they say, ‘never cast a clout till May is out’.”
The laughing hosts clearly hadn’t understood her so the weather expert further added: “Don’t take off your coat until the end of May,” which led to Sally exclaiming, “What,” followed by uncontrollable laughter.
Confusion hung in the air as Sally then asked: “Go on, what does that mean?” At this point, a blushing Carol glanced at her watch and swiftly changed the subject, remarking: “God, look at the time.” Presenters Jon and Sally were left scratching their heads during the live broadcast as the weather reporter delved further into the old saying.
Jon, who appeared completely puzzled, prompted: “Never what?” To clarify, the meteorologist responded: “Never cast a clout or a cloth until May is out.”
The explanation did little to dispel their bewilderment, with Sally visibly perplexed as she held her hands over her face as she questioned: “What is going on?”
Despite her attempt to enlighten them, Carol lightheartedly admitted defeat by checking the time and amusingly walking off the set, grinning broadly. Jon seized the opportunity for another quip, advising her: “Get your coat.”
Laughter overshadowed confusion as Sally and Jon attempted to steer the BBC show back on track. Sally recommended to the viewers: “While we try and figure out what’s been going on let’s get the news, the travel and the weather.”
Attempting to make sense of the earlier commentary, Sally mentioned to Jon: “It’s about keeping your coat,” while Jon, still in good spirits, replied: “I’m going to go and get a clout. A new clout,” Sally couldn’t help but express her desire for warmer times, asserting: “I want the summer to start now.”
