Bradley Walsh had to step in when a contestant broke down in tears during an episode of The Chase. On Tuesday’s instalment of the ITV quiz show, the former Coronation Street actor welcomed four contestants – Sandra, Laurence, Marlon and Kate – to test their general knowledge.

The team faced off against Shaun ‘The Dark Destroyer’ Wallace who was on top form. First to face him was Sandra, who found it tough going against the seasoned quizzer.

After Sandra was knocked out, Laurence stepped up to challenge the professional quizzer. Despite only managing to earn a meagre £2,000 in the cash builder round, he bravely chose the high offer of £30,000.

He performed much better at the podium than in the quick-fire round and successfully secured his place in the final chase with the impressive jackpot, reports the Express.

Marlon was next, who cleverly played for -£5,000 to ensure his spot in the final round. Lastly, Bradley welcomed Kate to the podium. After earning £2,000 in the cash builder round, she shocked the host by ignoring her teammates’ advice and playing for the higher amount of £50,000, prompting Bradley to exclaim “Good Lord”.

Defying the odds, Kate triumphed over the Chaser and secured her place in the final round. Overwhelmed with emotion, she broke down in tears.

Bradley then stepped in to offer some comfort and congratulate her on her victory, advising her to regain her composure for the final round.

In the last round, the team were battling to hold onto their impressive £75,000 but sadly couldn’t repeat their earlier success.

They managed to answer 15 questions correctly within two minutes, but the Chaser caught them out with just 36 seconds remaining.

The Chase airs weekdays from 5pm on ITV and ITVX
