The Met Office says a cold snap is coming and there is a possibility of snow, with bookmakers saying we could face a White Valentine’s Day and the coldest February on record. The Met Offoce says that fter a period of low-pressure dominance bringing a short-lived return to wet and windy weather, a high-pressure system is on the way.
This means cold conditions are likely to take hold, with temperatures falling below average by the end of this week.
Frank Saunders, Met Office Chief Meteorologist, said: “It’s worth being aware that despite a largely pleasant week ahead, there’s a good chance the UK will experience a dip in temperatures at the weekend and into next week. High-pressure is set to move in, bringing along with it easterly winds, low temperatures and an increasing risk of wintry hazards like snow and ice. We’ll know more as the week goes on so it’s worth keeping up-to-date with the forecast in your area.”
Areas of high pressure generally bring with them settled and dry condition. On this occasion the centre of the high is expected to lie over Scandinavia with easterly winds on its southern flank bringing cold air from the continent into the UK.
Bookmaker Coral now makes it odds-on at 4-5 (from 5-4) for snow to fall on Valentine’s Day this year. Coral has also trimmed the odds to 6-4 (from 7-4) on this month being the coldest February on record in the UK.
“It could be a frosty Valentine’s Day for many people this year, as our odds suggest there is a good chance snow will fall,” said Coral’s John Hill. “With temperatures dropping all the time, the odds continue to fall on this month ending as a record-cold February”
