If you’re keen to spruce up your home without undertaking major renovations, an interior designer has revealed her top three tips on what to avoid if you want to create a more stylish and chic home.
Designing an entire house or flat can be challenging and costly. To assist, designer and architect Dara Huang has shared her key advice on what not to do when decorating your home.
“Three things I would never do as a designer,” she began the video before delving into her list.
1. Don’t leave your walls bare
Good design is all about the details, and that includes your home. Dara encourages people to adorn all walls in your house with something to prevent them from appearing dull and plain.
Whether it’s art, a mirror, shelves, or dado rails, adding something to each wall in your house will make it pop.
2. Don’t show any clutter
“Number two, never leave clutter exposed.” Dara stated.
While clutter can make any home look cosy and lived in, there’s a fine line until it makes everything appear messy and disorganised.
But instead of discarding your items, Dara shared her simple solution.
“Get baskets, and more baskets,” she suggested, displaying two different types of baskets in the living room and bathroom.
3. Don’t just have a pendant lamp in a room
While having a nice big light in every room is handy for dark and gloomy days, they can also spoil the mood in any room.
Dara suggests using smaller lights scattered around the room, such as wall lights, standing lamps, ambient lights for shelves, and table lamps.
However, she doesn’t advise getting rid of pendant lamps entirely, but rather ensuring they match the rest of your home décor.
“And make sure your pendant lamp is decorative,” she added.
Despite Dara’s helpful advice, reactions were mixed in the comments section.
One user remarked: “Thank God she’s not my designer,” with another echoing the sentiment: “Same specially about not leaving walls empty.”
Yet, others appreciated her straightforward yet effective tips. “These sounds simple but they make so much difference,” one person noted.
“I super agree with the clutter part, I think even non-OCD people feels stressful seeing random stuff sitting around,” another user commented.
