The Maple Leafs dipped into their depth on Monday.

Ahead of their practice in Calgary, the Leafs recalled defenceman Dakota Mermis from the Toronto Marlies.

The move comes after fellow D-man Oliver Ekman-Larsson departed the Leafs 4-3 win in Edmonton against the Oilers on Saturday because of a lower-body injury.

The Leafs also sent forward Fraser Minten, who was a healthy scratch in Edmonton, to the Marlies.

Neither Ekman-Larsson nor winger Mitch Marner were on the ice for practice on Monday afternoon at the Scotiabank Saddledome, where the Leafs and Flames will meet on Tuesday night. A member of the Leafs’ media relations staff told reporters in Calgary that Ekman-Larsson and Marner were absent for maintenance reasons.

The 31-year-old Mermis has three assists in 12 games with the Marlies in 2024-25, but has not appeared in a game with the Leafs.

After the Utah Hockey Club claimed Mermis off waivers from the Leafs in December, Toronto reclaimed him in January.

In two stints with the Leafs this season, Minten has played in 15 games, scoring two goals and recording two assists. He has 10 points (five goals and five assists) in 16 games with the Marlies.

More to come …
