A historic pub in Bristol is set to close at the end of this week in order to undergo a refurbishment. The Mall, in Clifton, will close from Sunday (February 9) at 3pm for more than three weeks.

The pub, which during the 1960s was a Carwardine’s Tea room, will undergo a full refurbishment in order to give “the best experience”. The pub, located on The Mall, will reopen on Thursday, March 6, at 5pm.

Posting on social media, The Mall said: “Did you know that sixty years ago, the Mall was a Carwardine’s Tea room! It was a family business, importing their own tea, and roasted their own coffee beans. In the twentieth century they grew their business from central Bristol to suburbs like Clifton.

“It then became a pub, and changed many times through the years. Many of our regulars tell us the lovely memories they had in our lovely pub, coming as a teenager to celebrate graduations, to coming back with their own children to create more memories.

“We always want to give you the best experience, and for this we have been working very hard to plan a full refurb. For this to happen, we will be closing on February 9 at 3pm and reopen on March 6 at 5pm, to present to you an even more beautiful and cosy pub. We can’t wait to welcome you in again with the best atmosphere!”

The Mall, known for its “secret garden”, won TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice award in 2024. The review website said: “Welcome to Clifton’s most cultured pub. With its secluded secret garden and snug seating areas, the Mall is a winner all year round.”
