If you’re considering a romantic retreat with your other half for Valentine’s Day, or just as a special surprise, why not venture somewhere less travelled?

While Paris or Venice may be the first places that come to mind when thinking of romance, Spain boasts one of the most stunning and tranquil cities perfect for couples.

Bilbao is significantly quieter than Barcelona, making it an ideal spot for a peaceful weekend getaway. It is renowned for its industrial heritage and iconic cultural centres such as the Guggenheim Museum.

It also serves as the perfect base to explore the breathtaking beaches of the Basque Country, one of which is Azkorri.

This wild coastline, nestled below the Uribe Kosta cliffs, is easily accessible by car and offers facilities such as showers, toilets and picnic areas – perfect for unwinding after a dip in its crystal clear waters.

You can reach Azkorri by driving along the BI-634 road or taking the metro (line 1) to Larrabasterra station.

If you prefer to leave the car behind, you’re in luck. Last year, Bilbao was recognised as one of Europe’s most walkable cities in the World’s Best Cities report by Resonance Consultancy – tying with Valencia.

Let’s not forget about the food. Bilbao offers a plethora of mouthwatering local delicacies to try. Why not sample txuleta (a special sirloin steak) and kokotxas (a delicious fish stew) as part of a tantalising menu?

There’s never been a better time to explore this paradise as easyJet operates direct flights to Bilbao from Bristol Airport.

In addition, Vueling Airlines recently announced a new route to Bilbao from London Heathrow. This in addition to the Spanish carrier’s existing 21 weekly flights to Bilbao.

Tickets with both airlines are already available for purchase, with flights running from March 30.
