A luxury property described as a “Victorian Gothic masterpiece” is up for sale in Paris, Ont., just north of Brantford.

Built in 1854 for Charles Whitlaw, the Whitlaw House sits on over 1.25 acres of manicured grounds, states the listing with NYC-based Concierge Auctions.

Whitlaw was a flour manufacturer, who own the mill in Paris during the mid to late 1800s. He was also a councilman, reeve and mayor, school trustee and a deacon in the Congregationalist church.

The building is a 5,812-square-foot residence with two-foot-thick walls that the listing agent says “reflects the work of period experts who have restored its original features.” Those features also include a slate roof, hardwood floors, plaster moldings and five fireplaces.

The main floor is 3,421 square feet and includes an embassy-scaled dining room, formal double living room, a family room with a working fireplace and a light-filled study. The second level is 2,391 square feet with four large, unique bedrooms. There is a 1,389-square-foot attic, and a home gym in the 1,716-square-foot lower level.

The grounds surrounding the property include a mix of manicured lawns, mature trees, stone terraces and landscaped gardens.

“It’s so magnificent, many weddings have been held on the grounds,” states the listing. The exterior includes a recently added saltwater inground pool and an outdoor dining pergola for gatherings.

Nearby Paris, Ont. — known as “Canada’s Prettiest Little Town” — has a vibrant downtown with boutique shops, gourmet restaurants and cozy cafés. The main street, says the listing agent, is frequently chosen as a shooting location by movie producers.

The Stratford Festival with its multiple theatre productions is an hour’s drive away. The property is also close to Langdon Hall, which is renowned for its exceptional dining and luxurious spa.
