The popular Netflix series, The Recruit, is back with Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo) embarking on a secret mission to South Korea.

His latest task involves assisting a Korean National Intelligence Service (NIS) agent in locating his abducted wife. The agent, Jang Kyun (Teo Yoo), is determined to save his wife from what initially appears to be a random kidnapping.

However, it soon transpires that she was taken by the fictional Yakuza mob due to her non-profit organisation being used as a front for a cryptocurrency conspiracy, partially endorsed by both the CIA and NIS.

In the second last episode of the season, it’s revealed that Jang Kyun’s wife, Nan Hee (played by Sanghee Le), is being held captive in Russia.

The final episode tracks the agents’ rescue mission, which begins with Owen borrowing a boat from his old friend, Yoo Jin (Shin Do-hyun), reports the Mirror.

As they navigate Russian waters, they’re intercepted by the coast guard who question their reasons for entering the country.

Jang Kyun and Yoo Jin manage to convince the guards that they’re merely there for fishing, bribing them to cross the border without any issues. Meanwhile, Owen and Lester (Colton Dunn) are concealed within the boat.

While everything seems to be going smoothly at sea, Nichka (Maddie Hasson) contacts the agents to inform them that Nan Hee is alive, but the compound where she’s being kept is heavily fortified and too risky for them to infiltrate.

Owen devises a scheme to entice the Yakuza onto the water, under the guise that an insurance company specialising in kidnap and ransom is willing to pay for Nan Hee’s freedom.

In the fourth episode, Owen and Jang Kyun negotiate with the Yakuza over the ransom for the victim. Regrettably, they reject Owen’s $1 million proposal, demanding instead a hefty $10 million for her release.

Contrary to their initial sincere approach, Owen and Jang Kyun devise a new strategy for the deal. They plan for Dawn (Angel Parker), Dodge (Jesse Collin) and Lester to storm the ship and liberate the hostage before the transaction concludes.

Meanwhile, the CIA is concocting a scheme to lay the blame for the entire mission on Owen.

Despite approving the operation, the agency is aware of its legal complications and potential for mass casualties, leading them to take steps to safeguard their reputation.

The mission takes a turn for the worse when the Yakuza confront Owen and Jang Kyun. Despite being outnumbered, Dawn and Lester spot another boat filled with armed agents heading towards the main vessel.

This prompts them to abandon Owen and Jang Kyun, fearing the situation will escalate.

Lester outlines the decision to abort the mission to Yoo Jin, stating: “We can’t get into a firefight in front of the Russians. We’ll be KIA [killed in action] , or worse, captured alive, tried for espionage and tortured for the rest of our lives.”

Aboard the Yakuza vessel, the mobsters open a briefcase only to find it empty, resulting in the abduction of Jang Kyun and his wife.

Meanwhile, Owen manages to evade capture by diving into the water and swimming away from the gunfire of the Yakuza henchmen.

Surviving the onslaught, he decides to swim back to the boat to launch a fresh rescue mission.

After his daring escape, he breaks into a houseboat, where he kills one of the owners in a brutal attack and ties up the other. The surviving owner is later killed by Nichka.

Once safe, Owen contacts Dawn and Lester to inform them that he will proceed with the rescue mission, regardless of their support.

Nichka betrays Owen

His plan incites fury among the other agents, leading them to dispatch Nichka to retrieve the lawyer from the sea.

Unbeknownst to them, Nichka is a double agent working for the FSB (Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation), who have offered her a reward for delivering Owen and Jang Kyun to them.

Nichka attempts to abduct Owen at gunpoint, but he resists and manages to escape. The lawyer then locates Jang Kyun and Nan Hee and rescues them.

The trio find a car and make their getaway. However, Nichka opens fire on them, intent on fulfilling her deal to hand over Owen to the KSB.

Their vehicle is damaged by the gunfire, forcing the escapees to take to the water. They are soon found by Yoo Jin’s boat and they climb aboard.

But their troubles are far from over as the coastguard begins to chase and shoot at their vessel.

Just when things seem dire for the agents, a US Navy submarine emerges, deterring the coastguard and securing their safety.

Following the mission’s success, Owen informally invites Jang Kyun to become part of the CIA.

Despite the Korean spy’s initial reluctance, he is swiftly persuaded by Owen’s argument: “You wanna live happily ever after with your wife or go back to Korea and get locked up for treason.”
