Princess Beatrice’s daughter’s name could be a subtle tribute to Prince Andrew if the royals continued a family tradition.

Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi welcomed their daughter Athena Elizabeth Rose on January 22, just minutes before 1pm at London’s Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

The newborn’s middle name was considered a sweet nod to the Late Queen Elizabeth.

Edoardo shared the news in a statement posted to his Instagram on January 29, in which he described his second daughter as “tiny and absolutely perfect”.

The name Athena does not have links to the British Royal Family, with fans speculating the reason behind the choice.

One theory suggests that the Greek name is a subtle nod to Prince Andrew, Beatrice’s father, who was forced to step back from royal duties in 2019 following negative public opinion.

It was reported in 2021 that Beatrice’s first daughter’s name, Sienna, was a tribute to Sarah Ferguson, as both names begin with an ‘S’.

A source told Hello: “They were looking for an Italian name which started with an S for Sarah, to honour the Duchess.”

Royal fans have suggested that Athena could be a tribute to Beatrice’s father Prince Andrew, which also begins with an ‘A’.

Athena’s middle name, Elizabeth, follows a long-standing royal tradition.

Beatrice’s own middle name is Elizabeth along with her first-born Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, who is said to have met her little sister.

The name marks the seventh royal reference to the late Queen by her descendants.

The Queen’s own daughter Princess Anne, Princess Beatrice, Lady Louise Windsor, Princess Charlotte, Princess Lilibet of Sussex, Zara Tindall’s daughter Lena, Athena’s sister Sienna and now Athena herself are all named after Britain’s longest-serving monarch.

Prince Andrew has kept a low profile since receiving major backlash after discussing his friendship with late paedophile Jeffery Epstein in a 2019 Newsnight interview.

The disgraced duke was forced to step back from working royal duties and has kept a low profile in his royal Windsor property.

Andrew was also described as a “close confidant” of a Chinese businessman who had been kicked out of the UK on national security grounds, leading to further backlash in December 2024.
