A child has been taken to hospital following a blaze in north Belfast.

Emergency services were called to scene of a fire on Veryan Gardens in Newtownabbey on Friday afternoon.

The Air Ambulance landed in the area shortly after the blaze broke out just before 1.40pm.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) said it received a 999 call at 1:37pm

“NIAS despatched one Emergency Ambulance crew and one Rapid Response Paramedic to the incident,” a spokesperson said.

“The Charity Air Ambulance with HEMS on board was also tasked to attend.

“Following initial assessment and treatment at scene, one patient was taken to Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children by ambulance.”

Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) crews also attended with several appliances including an aerial platform despatched.

A spokesperson said two appliances were dispatched from Whitla Fire Station, one from Westland Fire Station and another form Knock Fire Station.

“Firefighters were called to reports of a terraced house on fire in Veryan Gardens, Belfast,” they added.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire and two casualties were transferred to the care of the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

“The cause of the fire is believed to have been accidental ignition and the incident was dealt with by 4.09pm.”
