There is a warning of potential disruption in east Belfast for many heading home during the busy rush hour tomorrow due to a high-profile football fixture.

Glentoran host rivals Linfield at the Bet McClean Oval tomorrow evening with kick off scheduled for 7.45pm.

Police said around 6,000 supporters are expected to attend the Mersey Street venue.

The PSNI urged people to expect delays and that those travelling in the area or attending the match should leave extra time.

A PSNI spokesperson said: “A build-up of traffic is to be expected in the areas of Sydenham Road, Dee Street, Lower Newtownards Road and areas surrounding the stadium before and after the game.

“Supporters are advised to plan their journey in advance and also be reminded that roadworks are scheduled to take place on the Sydenham Bypass from 10pm on Friday 31st January until 6am on Monday 3rd February.

“Those travelling home from the match should take this into account when planning their journey.

“We would ask that those driving to the match, park with consideration for local residents and businesses, and that supporters are respectful and considerate whilst walking through residential streets convenient to the stadium.

“The areas around the stadium are ‘No Street Drinking’ zones under Belfast City Council by-laws and these by-laws should be complied with at all times.”
