A 62-year-old man has been extradited from the Republic to Northern Ireland as part of the criminal proceedings into the murders of three RUC officers during the Troubles.

Police said the man from the Lurgan area was initially arrested in the Republic of Ireland on 21 August 2024.

They confirmed he is expected to appear before Craigavon Magistrates Court later today.

The man is due to stand trial accused of the murders of Sergeant Sean Quinn and Constables Allan McCloy and Paul Hamilton.

All three men were murdered in a landmine attack at Kinnego Embankment near Lurgan on 27 October 1982.

They had been responding to a call when the explosion flung their unmarked Ford Cortina 70ft (21m) into a nearby field.

The blast left a huge crater in the road and witnesses described seeing two people running away from the scene.

The three RUC officers were killed instantly in the blast.

The investigation into the murders was adopted by the Kenova Team in 2019 under Operation Turma, with the proceedings being taken forward by the PSNI’s Legacy Investigation Branch.

PSNI Sergeant Davey from the International Policing Unit said: “The Police Service of Northern Ireland has been liaising closely with An Garda Siochana and today’s arrest demonstrates the benefits of joint working between police forces and other national partner agencies.

“In this particular case, we worked closely with the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Legacy Investigation Branch and An Garda Siochana to locate this male and bring him before the courts.

“We will continue to work closely with our partners to bring offenders before the courts and deliver justice to victims and their families.”
