Jordan Henderson has agreed to leave Ajax after 18 months at the club to join Ligue 1 outfit Monaco.

The move will come as a shock to many in England after being appointed Ajax captain during his time in the Netherlands.

Henderson only moved to Ajax last year after a short spell in Saudi Arabia where he played under Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq, who has since been sacked.

But the England international is on the move again this month, signing for Monaco on a contract until the summer of 2026.

It will see him reunite with former Liverpool star Takumi Minamino, who he played with on Merseyside for two seasons.

With Monaco in the Champions League, there is even the chance he could make an emotional return to Anfield.

The Principality club have progressed to the latter stages of the European competition via the play-off phase but face a tough route before the knockouts.

They will face either PSG, Brest or Benfica – with the winner set to face Liverpool or Barcelona in the last-16.

Henderson came under heavy fire for leaving Liverpool for Saudi Arabia in the summer of 2023, signing a mammoth contract with Al-Ettifaq alongside Gerrard.

However, the 34-year-old became disillusioned with life in the Middle East after just six months.

Despite being named captain of Ajax, Henderson has had some trouble in recent weeks in Amsterdam – including a bust-up with team-mate Bertrand Traore during a Europa League tie.

Nevertheless, the former Sunderland star will bring a wealth of experience to Monaco – who are renowned for playing several youngsters.

Monaco’s squad has an average age of 24 while they are pushing for continental qualification in Ligue 1.

Les Monegasques currently sit third in the table, 13 points off league leaders PSG.

And signing Henderson could provide that added boost in experience that they need to help get them over the line.
