Choosing a name for a child is among the most significant decisions parents face, with many aiming for a unique and memorable name that won’t negatively impact the child’s future.
A name can influence perceptions of a person, so it’s crucial for parents to choose one that suits their child from infancy through to adulthood.
Often, the quest for uniqueness can inspire wonderfully creative monikers, while other parents may conjure up rather unusual names merely to stand out.
TikTok and Instagram influencer Rydel Funk, who is also the keyboardist in the band R5 starring her brothers, welcomed her fourth child into the world on 27 January, 2025.
While Rydel and her spouse Capron Funk have encountered criticism for the distinctive names given to their previous three children—Super, Sweetie, and Storm—the couple has now unveiled their eagerly-awaited choice for their new-born daughter’s name, which has left fans less than impressed.
Rydel took to Instagram to post a picture of her baby girl, who was a sizeable 8.8lbs at birth, as she revealed the infant’s name: Sugar Lover Funk—a name imbued with sentimental meaning for Rydel.
In an Instagram post, she revealed: “Sugar Lover Girl is what my daddy has called me my entire life, so basically he named her haha passing on my nickname to my baby Sugar!”
Some users congratulated Rydel and Capron on their newest addition, with one saying: “OMMGGGG LIL SUGAR FUNK! Thats actually sooo cute!!”
Another user praised: “What a gorgeous little Sugar Plum!!!”
However, others expressed disapproval, suggesting the name sounded more suitable for a pet than a human. One critic commented: “Do people realize these kids will have to walk into their jobs one day saying ‘hey my name is sugar lover funk’ these are real humans, not pets or dolls.”
“If that’s not an exotic dancer name I don’t know what it,” a second person said.
A third user questioned: “The fact that two adult human beings AGREED on this name is baffling to me,” while another user stated: “Those poor kids. Such unfortunate names.”
