The Department of Work and Pension (DWP) benefit system is set for several changes in the coming months. And for those who receive cash from DWP, it is important to be aware of any alterations so you can budget accordingly.
Benefits are typically paid regularly into a person’s chosen account on certain dates. However, this schedule changes when the due date falls on a bank holiday.
That said, with no bank holidays until April, payments for February and March—including Universal Credit, State Pension, and Personal Independence Payments (PIP)—should proceed as planned.
Here are some key dates and changes DWP benefit claimants should be aware of, as well as other money changes:
March
The deadline for anyone wishing to claim the 2024/25 Winter Fuel Payment is March 31. If you were born before September 23, 1958, you might be eligible for a payment, provided you meet the qualifying criteria.
This date also marks the end of the Household Support Fund, a cost of living support scheme offered by local councils to assist with expenses such as energy and water bills, food, and essential items.
April
On April 5, the Tax Credits service will cease. This is also the last day individuals can make voluntary NICs for the contribution years 2006/7 to 2015/16, to boost New State Pension entitlement.
The following day, April 6, will see an increase in DWP and other benefits payments. Social security benefits will rise by 1.7%. The income limit for Carer’s Allowance is set to rise from £151 to £196, while the New and Basic State Pensions, along with the Minimum Guarantee component of Pension Credit, will see a 4.1% increase.
The National Minimum Wage will also be boosted by 6%.
This means that:
- For apprentices and those under 18 it will rise to £6.40
- For people aged 21 and over it will rise to £12.21 per hour
- For 18- to 20-year-olds it will rise to £10.00 per hour
A number of benefit payment dates may move in April, due to there being two bank holidays – Friday, April 18, and Monday, April 21. If you are due a payment on either of these dates, it will likely be made earlier.
