Bristol Rovers are closing in on the signing of midfielder Matt Butcher on a loan deal until the rest of the season from Wycombe Wanderers, Bristol Live understands.

As reported elsewhere, Rovers are close to bringing the 27-year-old to the Mem for the remainder of the campaign following limited game time for the Chairboys in their League One promotion bid.

Butcher has played just 231 minutes of league football for Wycombe this season, starting just three matches with the majority of his game time coming in cup competitions.

The midfielder made the move to Adams Park from Plymouth Argyle last January having been a key fixture in the Pilgrims’ League One promotion side of 2022/23.

Wycombe remain second in the third tier table despite the recent departure of their manager Matt Bloomfield, who departed for Championship strugglers Luton Town earlier this month.

The Gas have made one signing so far this month, bringing in another midfielder in Romaine Sawyers on a deal until the end of the season following the expiration of his contract at AFC Wimbledon.

Elsewhere, Rovers have also seen two midfielders depart with former loanee Jake Garrett returning to parent club Blackburn Rovers and Luke McCormick joining Forest Green Rovers on loan for the rest of the season.

They have also sanctioned a loan exit for left-back Bryant Bilongo to Harrogate Town this month while defender Michael Forbes also returned to his parent club West Ham United.

It is understood that the Gas are hopeful of bringing in more additions before the window closes on Monday with a centre-back and a striker believed to be the priority positions.

The hope will be that Butcher can be involved in the Rovers squad that faces Peterborough United on Sunday afternoon but that will be dependent on when he’s registered as a Gas player, assuming that the deal is completed.
