The 29th of January 2024. Opponents of the then DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson, and in particular of the deal he struck with the government over post-Brexit arrangements, have put together an elaborate plan, a political plot.

They called it ‘Operation Torpedo’. Its aim, to wreck the proposed deal.

Its tactic, to wiretap a secret DUP meeting and then relay what was happening in real-time in the hopes of scuppering the ‘Donaldson Deal’ – which for them, weakened the union.

The key figure in the scheme was loyalist Jamie Bryson – it was he who tweeted the meeting, word by word, as it was happening, to Donaldson’s dismay.

Now the Belfast Telegraph can reveal more details about what really happened, the technology issues, the codenames they used, and the number of people involved.

Joining Ciarán Dunbar with new and exclusive details of this extraordinary event, the Belfast Telegraph’s security correspondent, Allison Morris.
