Lidl has launched a new 99p that it claims has multiple health benefits. It claims its Solevita Collagen Shot is already a viral hit on social media, with more than 6.2m posts on TikTok, resulting in a 100% rise in searches from December to January as “the nation scrambles to get hold of one”.

Lidl said the benefits of collagen intake included improving skin smoothness, shiny hair and promoting a healthy gut, adding: “It’s no wonder the hack has been a hit. Now, Lidl joins the hype, with its Solevita Collagen Shot, offering 4.1% beef collagen Hydrolysate, alongside biotin and vitamins C and E, all within a delicious ready-to-drink, berry-flavour, 150ml shot.”

Lidl’s Solevita Collagen Shots are in store from Thursday, February 6, nationwide while stocks last.

Benefits of collagen

According to health.com, collagen is a naturally occurring protein in your body that forms flexible fibres. These help support cells and tissues. Collagen is found in tendons, bones, skin, ligaments and muscles.

As we age, the body produces less collagen, which is why some people turn to supplements to keep their levels up. Collagen helps to maintain skin elasticity, strengthen bones, improve muscle mass and help with heart and gut health.

People who will most likely benefit from taking a collagen supplement include:

  • Post-menopausal people
  • People with osteoporosis
  • People who want to improve skin hydration and elasticity (young and old)
  • People who want to improve muscle mass (with the addition of exercise)

Natural sources of collagen include chicken, pork, beef, fish, bone broth and food that contain gelatin. The body also synthesizes collagen from amino acids, which can be found in non-animal sources such as quinoa, mushrooms, cottage cheese, legumes and beans.
