If you are into skincare, you’ve probably noticed the overwhelming number of products available for women, while men seem to rely on multi-purpose 10-in-1 shampoos that claim to tackle all their needs. Despite this, many people are puzzled by how some men manage to have clear skin without a dedicated routine.
But according to one doctor, there’s actually a good reason for this. Dr Mark, MD (@dermarkologist), shared on TikTok why these all-in-one shampoos might be more effective than they seem. In his video, Dr Mark reacts to a clip of a woman washing her face with shampoo and waking up with ‘clear skin’.
While it is often assumed that these products aren’t good for your skin, he says that the opposite might be true. According to the dermatologist, these shampoos can work surprisingly well, despite their reputation of not being good enough, simply because they’re not part of many people’s skin routines.
“I hate to break it to you but men are on something by doing this”, he warns. “Because if you have dry skin around your eyebrows or around your nose or in your beard area or itchy bumps around your hairline and forehead, then these are all skin conditions that are caused by yeast buildup on the skin.
“Washing with an anti-fungal shampoo like Head and Shoulders when you have conditions like seborrhoeic dermatitis or fungal acne, this can be the secret to clear skin.”
You can buy Head and Shoulders in a number of stores across the UK including Tesco, Asda, Boots and Superdrug to name a few. So keep an eye out when you’re shopping next to see if they have suitable shampoos.
In the video the woman uses the brand’s ‘2 in 1 complete scalp care’ bottle. As always, before buying any product, read the instructions first to ensure you can use it for what you intend it for, such as on your face. You can buy the Head & Shoulders Anti-Dandruff Shower Gel and Shampoo for Hair, Body and Face here from Amazon for just £7.89 – and as mentioned in the title, it is designed for use on the face. So it could be worth giving the latter product a go – and save money whilst you get better skin and hair.
In their FAQ section, the brand explains what role fungus has in dandruff. They explain: “Dandruff itself is not a fungus, although it is caused by the presence of a naturally occurring fungus, Malassesia globosa.
“Dandruff is caused as this fungus breaks down oils on your scalp called sebum. This process produces oleic acid – something which 1 in 2 people around the world are sensitive to.”
As a result, your scalp may become irritated, which accelerates the renewal of skin cells in an effort to eliminate the irritant. This process leads to dandruff, as the excess skin cells clump together and form the flakes we often notice in our hair – or on our shoulders. Anti-dandruff shampoos help combat this by targeting and preventing the irritants responsible for these flakes, effectively reducing dandruff formation.
