Experiencing an itchy sensation while exercising is a common phenomenon – and many are just discovering the reasons behind this urge to scratch.
Gym-goer Shreya Chowdhary was perplexed when she felt her legs itch during a run on the treadmill. She took her query to TikTok, where her video amassed 15.7 million views.
Shreya asked viewers: “Can someone explain to me why I get so itchy on my legs whenever I run/walk? This has been happening for a year.”
She expressed hope that she wasn’t alone in this experience. And as it turns out, this reaction is quite normal. Others have indeed faced similar issues, though there seems to be little one can do to prevent it.
One person shared, “The same happens to me when I’m walking/running in cold weather. It gets so itchy, it starts burning.” Another revealed: “I have it happen all the time but I have urticaria. Happens if I get too hot or my skin gets too cold.”
Another added: “Omg yes, whenever I take long walks outside in leggings during autumn/winter my legs itch so bad, I literally have to stop walking.” And a fourth added: “Runners itch. Happens to me as well but only if I’m getting back into working out after a while. Consistently keep up with it, it goes away in a few days. Don’t stop walking/running.”
Main Line Health has reported that experiencing itching during a workout is not uncommon. A health expert elaborated on the phenomenon, saying: “During a workout, your heart rate and blood flow increase. Your heart is pumping more blood (and oxygen) to the muscles you’re using during your workout.
“In response, your capillaries and arteries expand to accommodate the amount of blood moving through the body.” They continued, explaining the biological response: “This process stimulates surrounding nerve cells and sends a signal to your brain. Interestingly, your brain translates this signal as the need to itch.”
They reassured that it’s nothing to be concerned about; it’s simply how the brain naturally responds, and altering this process isn’t really an option. The likelihood of experiencing this itching sensation increases if you have sensitive skin or haven’t exercised in some time.
Additionally, it may occur if you suffer from exercise-induced urticaria – an allergic reaction that can happen after intense physical activity, especially in extreme temperatures.
For those worried about their health, it’s recommended to check the NHS website or schedule an appointment with a GP for professional advice.
