As failing councils find a loophole to increase taxes, today’s GB News debate was whether councils should be allowed to hike tax rates if they’re going bankrupt.
Eight councils are proposing dramatic rises ranging from 9.99% – 25% from April, far exceeding the standard 4.99% maximum allowed under Government rules.
These extreme increases are possible through councils threatening to issue Section 114 notices – effectively declaring bankruptcy – which allows them to bypass normal restrictions.
More than 4.4million people will be affected by the increases according to the national newspaper audit.
COMMENT NOW – Should councils be allowed to increase taxes by more than 4.99%?
