While many of us aspire to have thick, flowing tresses, maintaining such sleek hair can become more challenging as we age.

Hair loss is a natural part of the ageing process and can be triggered by various factors, including genetics, hormonal shifts and medical conditions. However, if you’ve recently noticed your hair thinning, there might be a solution at hand.

NHS GP Doctor Shireen, renowned for her online health advice, recently disclosed that incorporating two simple elements into her diet helped stimulate hair growth and fill in the “empty patches” beginning to form on her scalp. Despite being somewhat concerned about these changes, she found that tweaking her diet encouraged hair growth, and she revealed all in an honest TikTok video.

Doctor Shireen said: “Firstly, as GPs and as doctors, we’re always taught that when it comes to things like supplements, food first, and I agree with that. We do get most of our vitamins in supplements through our diets, with the exception of things like Vitamin D.

“But, I mean the reality is, we’re living busy lives and so many people – I would say the majority of people – aren’t getting enough through their diet alone, so improving diet is number one. But, if it’s really hard for you to do that, then there is definitely a role for supplements.”

She continued: “Now, with me, I did a blood test, and I saw that I was really iron deficient. My ferritin levels were very low, so it was almost like within maybe a month to six weeks of me taking iron, and restoring those levels, that my hair growth just came back.

“The other thing that I’ve started taking, which has really helped, is Vitamin D. Now we actually recommend everyone to take Vitamin D from October to March, or all year around if you work indoors, and that helps not only energy levels, immunity, joints and muscles but hair as well.”

Since the video was posted, it has received over 1,000 likes and prompted viewers to share their own experiences. One person commented: “Ferritin 7 here so know what you mean.”

Another wrote: “Great achievement.” A third viewer also shared: “I have been taking ferritin and iron since last year as my doctor suggested, but I still have bald patches on the crown.”

Can iron aid hair growth?

Iron supplements can aid hair growth for those suffering from iron deficiency. Iron plays a crucial role in carrying oxygen to hair follicles, promoting hair growth.

It also aids cell repair and growth, including cells that stimulate hair growth. Moreover, iron contributes to the overall health of hair, giving it a shiny and smooth appearance.

On another note, Vitamin D is deemed essential for healthy hair growth as it aids in the proper functioning and growth of hair follicles. Although a deficiency in Vitamin D can lead to hair loss, such instances are rare.

If you suspect that your iron levels might be low, it’s crucial to consult with your GP. Always seek professional advice before starting any new supplements.
