Khabib Nurmagomedov – arch nemesis of Conor McGregor – has paid a glowing tribute to the people of Ireland for what he described as the country’s support of Palestine.

Nurmagomedov, who soundly beat McGregor in a hyped up grudge match seven years ago, watched his cousin Usman defeat Northern Ireland’s Paul Hughes in a Bellator bout in Dubai before taking the mic to praise Hughes and the island of Ireland.

“I know this is not my time to talk, I just want to say one thing,” said Khabib.

“With all the things between me and (Conor McGregor) when we were fighting. Don’t forget, Ireland is the biggest supporter in the world for Palestine. Don’t forget about this. We love you guys. You, your government, everybody.

“When we’re inside the cage, it’s only competition. MMA, all about respect. We love you guys because you guys support our brother[s] in Palestine.”

Hughes was gutted after his points defeat against the unbeaten Usman Nurmagomedov.

“I’m so gutted, I’m so disappointed. I really thought I won that one,” said Hughes.

“I should have pushed harder. Next time, we’re going to fight again there’s no question. So much respect to Usman.

“I thought I won tonight but look, I probably left some in the tank. I need to give everything next time and I will.”
