In recent times, Albania has gained a reputation as an affordable alternative to the Maldives, particularly for those travelling with family or during peak seasons. Known as the ‘Maldives of Europe’, it offers a cheaper option and remains relatively undiscovered.

Flights from London Luton to Tirana, the capital city of Albania, are priced at just £14.99 with Wizz Air. Accommodation in the city starts from around £20 per night, although prices can increase for more luxurious options or during peak periods.

Albania was isolated from much of the world for four decades until its Communist regime was overthrown in the early 1990s. Since then, the country has undergone significant transformation.

Tirana is a city steeped in history, with remnants of its Ottoman, Italian and Communist past still visible. Tourists are drawn to these historical sites.

The House of Leaves provides insight into the country’s recent communist history, while the Great Mosque of Tirana and the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania reflect the city’s religious diversity and associated history, reports the Express.

History enthusiasts should also visit the Byzantine-era Fortress of Justinian, also known as Tirana Castle. All that remains of this 13th-century structure is a 6-metre high Ottoman-era wall, but restoration works are currently underway.

Within these walls, you’ll find a modernised hub brimming with eateries, hotels, and cultural institutions – perfect for a quick pitstop to refuel before continuing your city tour.

For adrenaline junkies, Tirana offers the Dajti Ekspres, a hotspot for mountain biking, paragliding, and rock climbing.

Conversely, those seeking a tranquil retreat can use Tirana as a stepping stone to the Albanian Riviera, an area likened to the Maldives.

This portion of the Ionian Sea boasts stunning beaches, remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and charmingly unique towns and cities.

The ancient city of Bultrint, one of the UNESCO sites, is steeped in 2500 years of history spanning the Ancient Greek and Roman eras, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts.

And when you’re not basking on the region’s incredible beaches, make sure to visit Blue Eye (or Syri I Kalter to locals), a freshwater spring that tends to be less crowded than other Riviera spots.
