An elderly man was killed and two others injured in a Brampton house fire Saturday morning.
Emergency crews responded to the three-alarm residential fire on Buick Blvd. – near Mississauga Rd. and Wanless Dr. – just after 7:30 a.m.
“Our crews, on arrival, encountered some pretty significant fires,” Brampton Fire Chief Nick Ruller told CP24 at the scene, explaining the flames were “very challenging” to douse.
He said firefighters rescued multiple people from the burning house, which was occupied by “a multi-generational family.”
“As well we had several occupants that, what we would say, self-rescued or evacuated,” Ruller said. “One jumped from a second-floor window due to the conditions, and another came out through a window from the basement area.”
He said three patients were transported to a hospital.
“We have subsequently been advised that one of the occupants, an elderly male, has been pronounced deceased at hospital.”
The other two victims are expected to survive.
No further details about the about the victims were immediately released.
A photo posted on X by Ruller showed the large two-storey home was badly damaged.
The flames spread through several floors within the home and portions of the house ended up collapsing by the time the blaze was put out.
“At the height of this incident, we upgraded it to a third alarm to bring additional resources in,” Ruller said. “Obviously, with the weather conditions right now, we’ve got some challenges that we were facing with ice, with frozen hose lines and just traversing the property, but, overall, absolutely exceptional work by our crews.”
It is not yet known what sparked the fire, but the Office of the Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate.
