Alan Shearer has lashed out at the match officials for Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card in Arsenal’s win over Wolves on Saturday.

Riccardo Calafiori came up with a dramatic winner for Arsenal late in on a game which saw two players sent off.

Arsenal were first reduced to 10 men towards the end of the first half when Lewis-Skelly was shown a straight red for a late challenge on Matt Doherty.

VAR Darren England felt no need to intervene with Michael Oliver’s original decision and the red card stood, much to the dismay of Arsenal fans and some other viewers.

Arsenal were given a huge opportunity in the second half though when Wolves also had a man sent off with Joao Gomes being shown a red card.

Calafiori then grabbed the winner for Arsenal just a few minutes later for a vital three points for Arsenal.

But Lewis-Skelly’s red card proved to be a controversial topic after the match and Shearer couldn’t understand why the VAR didn’t intervene.

“As a referee you can get it wrong on the pitch, you might see something which is incorrect,” Shearer said.

“How on earth Darren England, the VAR, thinks that the referee has got that right and there is no need to send him to the screen.

“One of the worst decisions that I’ve seen in a long time.

“I just cannot see and work out what VAR is thinking going along with Michael Oliver’s decision.

“No wonder it gets criticised by so many people.”

Mikel Arteta praised his side for coping with going a man down and still managing to pick up all three points.

But the Spaniard couldn’t hide his frustation regarding the decision to send Lewis-Skelly off.

“It is that clear that I leave it to you guys. I am absolutely fuming but I leave it with you,” he said.

“Because it is that obvious. I don’t think my words are going to help.”

Arteta added that he was yet to receive an explanation from the match officials and was unable to confirm whether Arsenal would lodge an appeal.

“That’s for the club to decide what the best decision is,” he added.

“I think it’s that obvious, maybe we don’t even need to.”
