There’s an emerging star among Spanish islands that could easily overshadow Ibiza, yet it remains under the radar for most holidaymakers.

Tucked away in the Mediterranean is a serene haven with untouched scenery, crystal-clear seas, and it proudly features one of the world’s top 10 beaches, offering travellers a chance to experience a more genuine escape.

Forget the glitzy scene of Ibiza and set sail for Formentera, the tiniest of the Balearic Islands, where you can indulge in a quieter sojourn.

The jewel in the island’s crown is Platja Illetes, an unspoiled stretch of sand and azure waters celebrated as one of the globe’s best by Lonely Planet in their Best in Travel 2025 guide.

Perched at the western end of the Trucador Peninsula, Platja Illetes is likened by Lonely Planet to “as close a vision of the Caribbean (minus the coconut trees) as you could imagine in Europe”, reports the Express.

The travel authority cautions: “You may never want to leave. Just offshore are the two small illetes (islets), Pouet and Rodona, that give the beach its name. In high season, expect lots of day trippers from Ibiza.”

In stark contrast to the bustling nightlife and packed beaches of Ibiza, Formentera offers a tranquil atmosphere. With limited automobile use, cycling and walking become the preferred modes of wandering through the island’s hidden bays, dramatic cliffs, and quaint hamlets.

An idyllic location for sea lovers, Platja Illetes welcomes you with its shallow, balmy waters perfect for a dip, while its soft sands are just right for lazing in the sun.

Additionally, the beach is part of Ses Salines Natural Park, a safeguarded zone rich in both wildlife and greenery.

Formentera, with its tranquil atmosphere and pristine landscapes, is the ideal getaway for those in search of peace and quiet.

The island’s Natural Park of Ses Salines is a sanctuary for wildlife, providing a home to flamingos and rare seabirds.

To truly immerse yourself in Formentera’s beauty, rent a bike and traverse the network of trails that meander through pine forests, salt flats, and charming fishing villages.

Make sure to visit the Cap de Barbaria Lighthouse, where you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views of the island and the expansive blue horizon.

When it comes to food, treat yourself to the fresh seafood offered by local restaurants, sourced directly from the Mediterranean. Don’t forget to sample the regional speciality, bullit de peix (fish stew).

Just a quick ferry journey from Ibiza, Formentera is an excellent choice for a combined holiday on the Balearic Islands, offering the chance to experience both serene sunsets and vibrant nightlife.
