Many of us kick off our day with a steaming mug of coffee.
After all, it’s easy to be drawn to its delicious taste and the energy boost it provides when we’re feeling sluggish. But, a neuroscientist has recently advised against a common morning habit in relation to our beloved brew.
In a TikTok video, Robert Love warned his viewers about the potential negative effects on brain health if they drink coffee before water. He suggests that this practice could lead to problems, despite the typical urge for a caffeine hit upon waking.
In his video, Robert explains: “Dr Bruce, the sleep doctor, says hydrate before you caffeinate. The reason is we are most dehydrated when we first wake up in the morning. We’re actually dispelling air through our mouth as we breathe, and even our nose as well.
“And so you want to make sure you drink water before you drink coffee. By the way, drinking coffee on an empty stomach can increase acidity in your stomach, it can harm your stomach, it doesn’t feel as good.”
Robert then recommends delaying your coffee intake, adding: “Instead, wait 90 minutes after waking up to have your first coffee. Make sure you drink water then – that’ll be really good. Bonus – get outside in the sunshine when you first wake up – your brain is going to love that.
“That sunshine not only feels good but also tells your brain it’s morning. It improves your energy, mood and brain performance for the day.”
Since the video’s release, it has garnered over 1,000 views, with viewers chiming in with diverse responses. One commenter shared their routine, saying: “I do drink wanter then coffee.”
Another wrote: “I don’t drink coffee at all.” Meanwhile, a third person said: “90 minutes. My brew time is also too long to wait!”
Should I really drink water before coffee?
Health experts recommend starting your day with water prior to reaching for coffee. It aids hydration, digestion and metabolism.
After a good night’s sleep, rehydrating is crucial as dehydration can reduce body efficiency. Water can also kick-start your digestive system.
Beyond hydration, starting with water ensures your metabolism is revved up and ready for the day, possibly helping you avoid a “caffeine crash” later, which could leave you feeling increasingly fatigued.
For an enhanced morning health regime, incorporating fibre in your breakfast and engaging in some form of exercise is also advised.
