South Gloucestershire Council is introducing a booking system at four if its recycling centres. All visits to Little Stoke, Mangotsfield, Thornbury and Yate recycling centres will need to be booked in advance from March 2025.

The new system is being introduced due to recent government legislation which requires all councils to regulate the disposal of household DIY waste. The council believes the easiest and most cost-effective way to do this is by introducing a booking system.

According to the council many local authorities already have a booking system in place, including Bristol, Bath and Gloucestershire councils. People in those areas have experienced reduced queuing and congestion, making visits quicker.

The measures also prevent misuse by non-residents and commercial traders, provide better access to support for residents who may require assistance and improve operational efficiency onsite.

Councillor Sean Rhodes, South Gloucestershire Council’s cabinet member with responsibility for waste and recycling services, said: “We are alerting residents that they will need to book visits to South Gloucestershire’s recycling centres from the start of March. We recognise that these changes will mean people have to adapt, but we have confidence in the new system and will support anyone who needs additional help.

“The introduction of the booking system will mean that residents will no longer experience long queues as they wait to access the Sort It centres, and will enjoy quicker and more efficient visits. We need to regulate the disposal of DIY waste and we also want to ensure South Glos residents recieve the best value for their money.

“Preventing residents and businesses from outside the area from using our recycling centres will help save vital funds that can be spent where they are needed the most.”

Booking opens on February 24 2025 for visits from March 3 2025 onwards. People will be able to book a timeslot online at www.southglos.gov.uk/recyclingcentrebooking, by phone or at a council One Stop Shop.

People will need to provide their vehicle details, contact information and the type of waste you intend to bring. Residents who have accessibility needs will be able to indicate this when booking a timeslot.

You can book a slot anytime up to two weeks in advance of your visit, subject to availability. When you visit the recycling centre, you must bring your booking number and proof of address.

Additional requirements apply for using hired vehicles and commercial vehicles which will be detailed in the booking requirements. For more information about recycling in South Gloucestershire visit www.southglos.gov.uk/waste.
