Aardman Animations’ latest Wallace and Gromit epic has been nominated for an Oscar, the Academy Awards have announced.

The Bristol-made Christmas film Vengeance Most Fowl is one of five films nominated in the Best Animated Feature category, alongside huge Hollywood movies like the Disney/Pixar sequel Inside Out 2 and Universal/Dreamworks’ CGI movie The Wild Robot.

The Wallace & Gromit movie, which millions watched on BBC1 on Christmas Day, saw the hapless inventor create a robot gnome, which went rogue and caused havoc in their home town.

The movie featured was a big budget stop-motion clay animation spectacular, climaxing with a low-speed narrow boat chase over an aqueduct – which is not something that Disney, Pixar or DreamWorks considered for their films.

The nominations were announced this afternoon, but have been delayed for a few days by the Los Angeles wildfire disasters.

Timothee Chalamet is nominated for best actor for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in the biopic A Complete Unknown, while the first half of the movie adaptation of the Wizard of Oz prequel musical Wicked joins A Complete Unknown in the Best Picture category.
