CALI LACK OF CRISIS MANAGEMENT

Canada reminds me of the crisis management Los Angeles has to endure during this latest round of fires. We have lost sight of proper democratic and common sense approach to governance. Socialism and paying for everything, along with an abdication of responsibilities on our energy sector, has only hurt us in the long run. It seems our back-up reservoir and fire hydrants are out of water because we failed to plan for bad times. Don’t blame Trump — look in the mirror and blame the leaders that lacked foresight.

Peter Karas                                                                                                                                                  Oakville

(It’s astonishing the level of incompetence from the “leaders” in California. In fact, Trump had helped lay out a water use plan years ago, but they didn’t listen and instead focussed their resources away from fire fighting)

DEATH BEFORE ACTION

Re “Grand theft auto” (Toronto Sun front page, Jan.18): What are the courts/judges thinking? It boggles my mind that a criminal who has 75 prior convictions is still walking the streets and allegedly causing mayhem. What needs to be done for these criminals to be locked up for good? The revolving door in our so-called justice system is a total joke. Criminals know this, so they keep getting away with it because they know nothing will be done. Does someone have to die before something is done? This is insanity! It needs to stop.

Robert Onyskiw                                                                                                                                             Etobicoke

(We cover too many of these stories where the perpetrator has many multiple previous convictions. We need bail reform now)

PLAY HARD BALL

If you want to counter Trump’s proposed tariffs, do not play their game. Effective countermeasures should be unable to be used as American public propaganda. Canada is just a buffer zone between the U.S. and Russia. To get their attention, propose withdrawal from NORAD or NATO, or source armaments solely from Europe. The average American could not relate; however, the U.S. government would have to pay attention. Canada would have to increase defence spending, which is necessary anyway.

Edward Wychopen                                                                                                                                        Bowden, Alta.

(If Canada had a properly functioning federal government, we could have a reasonable response to the threat of tariffs)
